The Homeless are Still Homeless

Despite what mainstream media would have the average person (average here, referencing someone who has a roof over their head, at the very least) believe, the homelessness issue that was "seemingly sweeping the country" a few years ago, is still a problem.

But not the one the news would have you believe.

And, no, this isn't a "conspiracy theory" news bulletin. We're just hoping to jar some memories with this one.

A few years ago, major cities across the country were dealing with homeless encampments in a variety of ways. Some were fair, others were not.

The last few news publications we were able to dig up on the matter were dated from September of 2015 and January of this year. And nothing more since. No new ideas on how to deal with the problem. No more solutions to find ways to put these people back where they belong-home.

Just a lot of squabbling from both sides (along with some valid points from

And no, this is also not a "boo-hoo" sappy post about anyone, either.

But isn't it a bit disturbing how (like many "breaking news stories") those stories of people being pushed out of cities and forced into even more harrowing predicaments because of their treatment for being homeless, aren't really mentioned anymore?

Those people, who had a small window to have their voices heard and ask for help, are still out there somewhere. Like all of us, fighting to live until the next day, but in a situation that is vastly foreign to most of us. Wondering if this street or that sidewalk will be a safe place to crash for the night. If they'll get lucky to find some scraps of food. Will sleep be restful but not so heavy so as to not be an easy target for someone else looking to get ahead by taking advantage?

Will today be the lucky break they're looking for to get a job and slowly start lifting themselves out of the hole they've found themselves in?

If anything, this week's bulletin was just as a reminder. A reminder that just because something is no longer prominent in the news or even deemed "newsworthy" by some of the big names out there, those issues, those circumstances, those people, still matter. And when the cameras and interviewers and news posts are all gone and preoccupied with something "new" or "better" to get a higher rating or more subscribers, the "old news", more often than not, continues to live on.

Some "stories" have only themselves to blame. Others, were forced into their circumstances somehow.

Homelessness is one of those things in this world that, despite our best efforts, never seems to go away. We're not here to say that it is any one person's responsibility to end it. But remembering that it, like so many other far reaching crises in this world, still exists regardless if we choose to pay attention to it or not.

The problem will not go away if we choose to ignore it.

It doesn't work that way.

First step. Right?

We have to start somewhere. They're still people. And they still want a shot at something better.

We all do.

xoxo,
